This weekly wrap-up covers our journey from August 18 to 24. (Yes, I know we’re quite late!) We continued our tour of the Baltic capitals this week, spending time in Vilnius, Lithuania; Riga, Latvia; and Tallinn, Estonia.
Favorite thing we ate: This week we both have the save favorite food: fried bread with garlic and cheese [above left]. Seriously, it’s the best. It’s commonly served at pubs in Vilnius (we ate ours at Šnekutis in the Old Town), and we highly recommend ordering it with the cheese sauce. Thank us later. 😉 For a slightly healthier option (only slightly), Megan also loved the traditional black bread in Tallinn, which we enjoyed (with lots of butter!) at Rataskaevu 16 in Old Town [above right].
Favorite thing we drank: Jonathan favored the Pohjala Orange gose beer he tried in Tallinn [above left, photo from saveur-biere.com], and Megan had one of the best iced coffees of this trip so far at Beigelistai in Vilnius [above right].
Favorite thing we did: As you probably figured out by now, we love joining Free Walking Tours to acquaint ourselves with a new city. In Tallinn, we did something a little different and joined a costumed, interactive tour with Tales of Reval, which ended up being Jonathan’s favorite activity of the week [above left]. This tour was especially fun because it focused on the medieval history of Tallinn, and after learning about 20th-century history on our free walking tours in many nearby countries, it was refreshing to learn about a different time period. Megan enjoyed getting back into the swing of visiting libraries while traveling through the Baltics. [The National Library of Lithuania in Vilnius is pictured above right.]
What we’re reading: Jonathan is reading The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith and listening to The Outsider by Stephen King. Megan finished Between East and West: Across the Borderlands of Europe by Anne Applebaum and started The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead.
Total walking distance: 43.9 miles
Up next: Meeting up with family! Stay tuned to see where….
