This weekly wrap-up covers our journey from January 26 to February 1. After a long weekend in Ko Lanta (Koh Lanta), we took the ferry to Phuket on Monday and spent a few days in Patong before Megan’s dad flew back to the U.S. on Thursday evening. On Friday, we headed up to Khao Sok National Park for the weekend.
Favorite thing we ate: Jonathan had the best fried chicken he’s tried yet at OTOP Market in Patong Beach, Phuket [above left]. Megan really enjoyed having congee for breakfast at The Coffee Club in Phuket [above right].
Favorite thing we drank: Jonathan enjoyed his refreshing Chang beer with Megan’s dad on our golf outing [pictured above]. Megan is quite fond of the Thai iced coffee, though it’s not quite as good as the iced coffee in Malaysia.
Favorite thing we did: Megan loved spending time with her dad, especially when they went golfing in Phuket [above left]. Well, her dad went golfing. Megan and Jonathan followed in golf carts and cheered him on. Jonathan’s favorite activity was staying at the Smiley Raft Bungalow on Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park [above right].
Biggest splurge: We took Megan’s dad to the Lanta Elephant Sanctuary on the island of Ko Lanta, where we fed the elephants bananas and bathed them. We opted for the two-hour tour, which was 1,800 THB per person (~$60 USD each).
Best deal: Meeting up with Megan’s dad. Thanks, Bank of Dad! 😉 But also, our room at Khao Sok Bed & Breakfast was only $20 USD, plus $1 each for breakfast. Great deal!
What we’re reading: Jonathan finished The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager. Megan finished Long Bright River by Liz Moore and Darling Rose Gold by Stephanie Wrobel, and started Your House Will Pay by Steph Cha (one of her most anticipated reads from last fall).
Total walking distance: 25.06 miles
Up next: We were planning to revisit Chiang Mai (where we spent part of our honeymoon) and Chiang Rai via Bangkok, but then we learned burning season in northern Thailand had already started (when local farmers torch their fields, creating very bad air quality in Chiang Mai). So we asked our Khao Sok host for advice and will be heading to more islands instead. Stay tuned!
