Visited: July 2019
Between Slovakia and Poland, we spent a quick three days in Lviv, a beautiful city in western Ukraine. (Check out our list of 12 things to do in Lviv.) Here’s a detailed look at every hryvnia we spent in Lviv. (During our visit, 25 hryvnia ~ $1 USD.)
Ukraine: $235.60
Transportation: $1.66
We usually walk from the main bus station to our accommodations when arriving in a new city, but the main bus station in Lviv is located a ways out from the Old Town. We took a city bus to and from the main bus station; a bus ride is only 7 or 14 UAH (28 or 55 cents) depending on the bus, so it’s quite a good deal! Average: $0.55/day.
Lodging: $80
We found a simple apartment (with a washing machine! a huge bonus for long-time travel) just outside the Old Town on Booking.com. Average: $26.66/night.
Eating out: $110.68
I’m actually shocked this number is so low because we bought no groceries in Lviv (see below) and enjoyed lots of coffee and drinks in addition to our three meals a day. But, the food was very affordable, so I guess our moderately priced cocktails and coffee balanced out with the low food prices. Average: $36.89/day.
Groceries/household items: $0.59
We bought some cold drinks when we arrived at the bus station in Lviv to recover from our 10-hour overnight bus ride from Krakow. Average: $0.20/day.
Entertainment (tours, etc.): $15.76
Tip for our free walking tour guide. Average: $5.25/day.
Gifts & souvenirs: $7.95
In addition to our regular postcards and stamps, we bought some fabulous chocolate from one of Lviv’s chocolate shops. Average: $2.65/day.
Travel insurance: $18.57
We have travel insurance from World Nomads for $6.19/day. Travel insurance costs will vary depending on chosen plan, length of travel, location, etc.
Other: $0.39
Fee for public bathrooms at the bus station. (I told you—we really do track every cent!) Average: $0.13/day.
Total: $78.53/day = $39.27/person* per day
*Did you know we have a new page on the blog completely dedicated to Money & Budgeting? We also list our country-specific costs on this page, but those numbers might differ a bit from the numbers shown here. The numbers in our detailed budgeting posts (like this one) are a true reflection of what we personally spent on our trip. The numbers on the Money & Budgeting page are meant to reflect what a typical tourist traveling at our comfort level can expect to spend.
Of course, you can always spend far less (or far more) than the numbers listed here or on our Money & Budgeting page. These figures are provided as a loose guide to help you plan travels within your budget range.
