RTW Week 2: San Miguel de Allende & Mexico City

Two weeks down, (hopefully) 50 to go! 😉 This weekly wrap-up covers our travels from April 14 to April 20.

Favorite thing we ate: Jonathan loved the mini consuelos (tiny ice cream sandwiches made with churro discs) from El Moro at Mercado Roma. We’ve since been looking for them elsewhere but to no avail. After our historical walking tour of San Miguel de Allende on Wednesday, we had lunch at a rooftop taqueria in the centro: Baja Fish Taquito. Megan had a seafood tostada, two fish tacos and an agua fresca for only 90 pesos (less than $5 USD), so in addition to the food being delicious, it was a great deal.

Favorite thing we drank: Megan tried a prickly pear pulque curado (a fruity drink made with the fermented sap of the maguey plant) in Mexico City [above left]. Jonathan enjoyed his local Allende beer made with agave in San Miguel de Allende (also at Baja Fish Taquito) [above right].

Favorite thing we did: This week was less about excursions and more about simply enjoying our surroundings, as evidenced by our favorite activities of the week: Jonathan liked visiting the centro of San Miguel de Allende at night [above left] and Megan appreciated all the gorgeous, colorful homes in the town [above right].

Biggest splurge: A friend recommended drinks and tapas at Luna Tapas Bar. She warned it wouldn’t be cheap, but we had a lovely evening on the rooftop overlooking San Miguel de Allende. The drinks were fun and delicious, and the guacamole was the best we’ve had so far in Mexico.

Biggest oops: We got “lost” for the first time this past week. Megan had downloaded public transportation directions from the bus station in Mexico City to our apartment in the Coyoacán neighborhood, but it wasn’t until we took two wrong buses that we realized the numbers corresponded to subway routes, not bus routes. (Oops. Thanks, Jonathan!) Overall, not a huge deal, and once we figured that out it was easy to complete the trip, but now Megan knows how to identify the subway symbol on Google Maps! 😉

Other fun things: We met a couple from Seattle on our historical walking tour in SMA. When we were strolling around the park in Coyoacán on Saturday evening looking for dinner, guess who else was doing the same thing? We also discovered we had both been staying in La Roma area at the same time before we went to SMA. Small world! [Update: While writing this post on Sunday, we took a break to attend Easter Mass and get lunch. Who did we see at lunch? The same couple!]

Also, during dinner on Saturday evening, a young woman studying International Business asked if we spoke English (obvious Americans over here!), then asked if she could interview us for a school project. Her friend filmed us while she asked about our travels and recommended a few bars nearby.

On Thursday, we took a day trip from SMA to the city of Guanajuato. This is the view of the city from the hike up to the Monumento al Pípila. (You can also take the funicular to the top.)

What we’re reading: Megan finished Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli. She then took a break from her Mexico-inspired reading to participate in two Instagram buddy reads: Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison (which she loved!!) and Where the Line Bleeds by Jesmyn Ward (which she just started last night). Jonathan is continuing to enjoy The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, a British mystery.

What we’re watching: Remember when we said there’s nothing stopping us from spending a night in watching Netflix? Well, last night we did just that! We started watching Sex Education and only stopped because it was almost midnight. Very funny—highly recommend so far!

Total walking distance: 40.7 miles

Up next: Costa Rica!!
