RTW Week 3: Mexico City & Costa Rica

This weekly wrap-up covers our travels from April 21 to April 27. We spent a few final days in Mexico City before flying to San Jose, Costa Rica, on April 23, where we rented a 4×4 vehicle with a rooftop tent to travel around the country.

Favorite thing we ate: We were not disappointed by the tostada counter in the Mercado de Coyoacon last Sunday. Since being in Costa Rica, we’ve mostly been eating Cup of Noodles (hey, it’s a great camping food!), yogurt and cheese, but we did have a delicious “potato pocket” at Cafe Monteverde for breakfast one morning. It was flaky breaded goodness baked around diced potatoes, peppers and spices. Yum!

Favorite thing we drank: Also from Cafe Monteverde, Jonathan very much enjoyed our coffee milkshake. Megan didn’t mind the bottle of rum we drank with cokes on the beach in Costa Rica. 😉

Favorite thing we did: When in Costa Rica, you zip line! We had a great experience with The Original Canopy Tour in Monteverde [pictured above]. The guides were amazing, and even though we got picked up late, that meant we got a private tour because the group we were supposed to be with had already left. Score! Also, it was only $45/person, which is not super inexpensive when you’re budget traveling, but is definitely less than I expected to pay. Despite our fun zip lining experience, Jonathan’s favorite day last week was when we got to our first beach camping location (Playa Prieta) and set up camp.

Wild camping in Costa Rica

Biggest oops: The company we rented our 4×4 from recommended using the iOverlander app to find camping along our route. Our second night on the road, we found a great quiet spot near Monteverde [pictured above] … until a police officer woke us up in the middle of the night to tell us you can’t camp by a river in Costa Rica without a permit. Oops. When we asked the rental company about it the next day, they said we’re allowed to camp by rivers, but we’re not going to risk it. We’re not trying to be #assholesoutdoors, I promise! Since then, we’ve been camping in private lots (and asking the business owners first) or talking to locals before setting up our camp.

What we’re reading: Megan is continuing to read Where the Line Bleeds for an Instagram #buddyread. She also read (and was unfortunately disappointed by) The Last Thing He Wanted by Joan Didion. She read it because it was supposed to be set in Costa Rica, but it barely was. She is currently reading Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. Jonathan finished The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (he recommends to mystery fans!) and jumped right into another British novel: Dear Mrs. Bird.

What we’re watching: After we posted about starting Sex Education last week, we finished season one that evening. Oops. We’ve been pretty offline this past week (hence why the weekly update is one day late!), so we’re not currently watching anything.
