RTW Week 37: Sri Lanka & Singapore

This weekly wrap-up covers our journey from December 15 to 21. We visited Nuwara Eliya and Kandy in Sri Lanka before heading back to Colombo to fly to Singapore on Thursday evening. Megan’s mom arrived in Singapore on Friday evening and we spent the weekend exploring the city-state.

Favorite thing we ate: Megan’s mom used to live in Singapore and was able to connect with some of her Singaporean friends, who took us to dinner at a local restaurant outside the city center. Yum!! The main dish was chili crab [Megan’s attempt at cracking the crab, pictured above left], but we had quite a few delicious dishes. Our favorite was the peppered beef [front dish, pictured above right].

Favorite thing we drank: Our favorite drinks this week were both chosen more for the experience than the taste. Jonathan picked his Singapore Sling because we drank them at Raffles Hotel, where the drink was invented in the early 20th century [above left]. Megan had a pleasant surprise when The Grand Hotel Coffee Bar in Nuwara Eliya brought her coffee with latte art featuring her own face [above right]. When the barista delivered the coffee, she said, “It’s you.” Then she gave Jonathan his coffee (with bunny latte art) and clarified, “This is not you.” Ha!

Favorite thing we did: Jonathan’s favorite activity of the week was visiting The Jewel in Singapore Changi Airport for the evening light show [above left]. Megan especially liked hiking Ramboda Falls in Sri Lanka, which included crossing a waterfall [above right] to get to another waterfall where Jonathan swam at the base.

Our Uber got hit by a tuk tuk in Colombo, Sri Lanka

Biggest oops: This wasn’t our oops, but our Uber got in an accident on the way to the Colombo airport. It wasn’t too bad–a tuk tuk clipped the front of our car while changing lanes [pictured above]–so given the crazy traffic in Colombo, we’re relieved it was this tame. Hopefully this will fill our car accident quota for the year!

Reading Island of a Thousand Mirrors at Café Secret Alley in Kandy, Sri Lanka

What we’re reading: Jonathan is continuing to enjoy Red Lotus by Chris Bohjalian (scheduled release date: March 17, 2020). Megan finished Thick: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom, read the very quick Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid (one of her most anticipated winter reads), and started a historical fiction novel about the civil war in Sri Lanka: Island of a Thousand Mirrors by Nayomi Munaweera.
