RTW Week 41: Malaysia

This weekly wrap-up covers our journey from January 12 to January 18. We spent most of the week in George Town before taking a ferry to the island of Langkawi on Thursday afternoon.

Favorite thing we ate: We visited so many food courts in George Town, but Megan’s favorite was New World Park Food City. We went back three times! The dumplings from the Chinese food stall were particularly good [pictured above left with cucumber salad and hot basil chicken with rice]. Jonathan especially loved the chicken wings we got at a food court on Macalister very close to our Airbnb [pictured above right with char kway teow, a popular Malaysian noodle dish].

Favorite thing we drank: We learned why the local iced coffee in Malaysia is so good–instead of roasting the coffee beans for this drink, they are FRIED. IN. BUTTER. Wow. So for the second week in a row, local iced coffee wins favorite drink of the week. (This time for both of us.)

Favorite thing we did: George Town is famous for its street art, so we walked around town for several hours one day searching for some of the most famous murals (and finding others along the way). Expect a full photo gallery someday because these murals were just so darn fun.

Biggest splurge: Jonathan got an hour-long massage in George Town for 100 RM, which is about $25 USD. So, as usual, splurge is relative. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Best deal: Combining two of our favorite things from the week, the local iced coffee at New World Park Food City was only .90 RM each–about 22 cents! How could we resist?? (We didn’t; Megan regularly had two iced coffees with each meal at this food court. And yesโ€”we got the dumplings again!)

What we’re reading: Jonathan finished The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren and started The Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager. Megan read Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory (not her favorite book in the series, but it was fun and quick) and The Women of Brewster Place by Gloria Naylor (recommend as a classic read-a-like for fans of Girl, Woman, Other). She started The Parking Lot Attendant by Nafkote Tamirat as part of @beingabookwyrm‘s second #ReadEthiopian week on Instagram.

Streaming the college football championship abroad

What we’re watching: Of course we couldn’t miss the College Football Playoffs National Championship ๐Ÿ˜‰ so we finally bought a VPN so we could stream the game on ESPN. Honestly, we should have had one of these from the beginning, so if you’re planning your own RTW (or long-term) trip, get a VPN!

Total walking distance: 29.94 miles
